Kyrgyzstan plans to commission small hydropower plants (HPP) with a total capacity of 80 MW in existing reservoirs from 2024 to 2027, Trend reports. This initiative is part of Kyrgyzstan's National Energy Program until 2035, which has been submitted by the Cabinet of Ministers for parliamentary review.
The program includes the following projects:
Balasaryu HPP: Located in the Kirov reservoir, this plant will have a capacity of 21 MW and is scheduled for commissioning in 2024.
Orto-Tokoy Reservoir HPP: This 21 MW plant is expected to be operational by 2026.
Kara-Kul HPP: Set to be commissioned in 2026, this plant will have a capacity of 18 MW.
Papan HPP: With a capacity of 20 MW, this plant is planned for commissioning in 2027.
According to the Institute of Water Issues and Hydropower of the National Academy of Sciences of Kyrgyzstan, the country's hydroelectric resources amount to 245.2 bn kWh, with 142.5 bn kWh being technically feasible for exploitation.
The hydroelectric potential is mainly concentrated in the river basins of the Naryn (36% of the total), Fergana Valley (27%), Sary-Jaz (10.7%), and Chuy (9%). The most promising areas are:
Naryn River Basin: Potential capacity of 6,970 MW.
