An incident involving the use of firearms occurred on the Kyrgyz-Tajikistan border on May 7, Kyrgyzstan's State Committee for National Security reports. The incident occurred at 12:20 PM (GMT+6) near the Ak-Bosoga settlement in the Batken region, where Kyrgyz border guards observed Tajik shepherds grazing cattle at a distance of 250-300 meters from the Kyrgyz state border.
According to the committee's statement, Kyrgyz border guards asked the Tajik citizens to leave, but they responded by throwing stones. One of the Tajik shepherds then fired several shots towards the Kyrgyz border post. In response, "to avoid an aggravation of the situation," the Kyrgyz border guards fired warning shots into the sky. This action prompted the shepherds to flee back to Tajikistan.
There were no reported injuries among the Kyrgyz border guards. However, one of the Tajik citizens sustained a leg wound, as indicated by a photo shared by Kyrgyz police.
"Since Tajik law enforcement officials sent only a photo, it is not known under what circumstances, when and where this citizen was injured," the statement stressed, adding that the issue will be addressed at a special meeting between representatives of the two countries.
The Kyrgyz State Committee for National Security emphasized that the issue will be addressed at a special meeting between representatives of the two countries. A meeting of border representatives from both parties is expected. Currently, the situation at the Kyrgyz-Tajik section of the border is described as stable.
Despite positive moves toward conflict resolution in February when Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan made progress toward a final settlement to end decades of border disputes, disagreements still persist. Both countries agreed on the delimitation of 90% of the contested territory.
