A high-level meeting convened in Fergana on May 7, focused on a wide array of regional security issues, encompassing terrorism, extremism, illegal drug trafficking, illegal migration, smuggling, and other cross-border threats.
Meeting brought together the Chairman of the State Security Service of Uzbekistan, Abdusalam Azizov, the Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan and Chairman of the State Committee for National Security, Kamchibek Tashiyev, and the Chairman of the State Committee for National Security of Tajikistan, Soymomin Yatimov. Each party shared insights on the current state and future prospects of cooperation in these critical areas.
Furthermore, the participants delved into the imperative of fostering favorable conditions for cross-border collaboration and promoting good neighborly relations. Of particular importance were discussions surrounding the delimitation and demarcation of state borders between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, as well as Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan.
Constructive dialogue ensued, leading to agreements on the delimitation of Kyrgyz-Tajik borders and the expediting of demarcation processes along the Uzbek-Kyrgyz state borders. Practical measures were delineated to address these issues, taking into account the mutual interests of all parties involved.
Members of the Kyrgyz-Tajikistan intergovernmental commission were tasked with coordinating the remaining sections of the border, preparing, and signing relevant bilateral agreements.
The meeting builds upon previous diplomatic efforts, including the signing of a protocol during a 2023 government delegation meeting between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, aimed at addressing border challenges comprehensively. Recent reports have also hinted at the possibility of territorial exchanges between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan as part of broader border resolution strategies.
