A high-level delegation from Turkmenistan has arrived in Tehran, Iran, for talks on prospects for cooperation in the electricity sector, the Tehran Times reports.
The two sides exchanged their views regarding the expansion of the common capacities and the process of facilitation of financing the joint venture project for the construction operation of 3rd electricity transmission line between the two states.
"Once the said electricity transmission line is launched, the electricity connection capacity between the two neighbors will increase threefold," said Mehrdad Eqlimi, the director general of the foreign trade office of Iran’s Power Generation and Distribution Company (TAVANIR).
Turkmenistan also sells this energy source to Afghanistan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. Ashgabat now is interested in the Caucasian (via Iran) and South Asian (via Afghanistan) markets.
In Turkmenistan, electricity is generated from natural gas. According to the state plan, total electricity production should reach 37.5bn kilowatt-hours in 2028, up from 28.4bn in 2021.
Experts told Daryo that this sector of the local economy is being supported by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), which has provided $500mn for the construction of transmission lines across the country.
