Kazakhstan observed an increase in electricity tariffs, with a 6% rise for the month and a 26% increase y/y. The country's electricity output in 2M24 amounted to 21.4 bn kilowatt-hours (kWh), which is a 3.2% increase from the same period in 2023. The Pavlodar, Karaganda, and Atyrau regions were the leading electricity producers, contributing 60.7% to the national total.
The data indicates a 5.9% increase in electricity tariffs over the last month. Regions experiencing the most significant adjustments include North Kazakhstan, East Kazakhstan, Abay, Pavlodar, and Almaty, along with the city of Almaty. Other regions maintained their electricity costs at the February 2024 level.
The Majilis is reviewing amendments related to the enhancement of renewable energy sources (RES), the power industry, and the regulation of natural monopolies. The legislation aims to oversee the energy sector, particularly the development of small-scale RES facilities, and to establish a framework that attracts investment into the energy sector.
The production cost of 1 kWh of electricity is UZS 970 ($0.076) in Uzbekistan as of 2023, the Ministry of Energy reports. With an average household consumption of 200 kWh per month, the state provides a subsidy of UZS 135,000 (nearly $11) per consumer, affecting 7.4 mn households.
