On February 5, the government of Kazakhstan resigned, as reported by Akorda. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev signed the relevant decree, marking a significant shift in the country’s political landscape.
Roman Sklyar Appointed as Acting Prime Minister
Following the resignation, Roman Sklyar was appointed as the acting Prime Minister. Sklyar, who has been serving as the First Deputy Prime Minister since January 2022, will now take on the duties of the Prime Minister.
The decree signed by President Tokayev states:
"In accordance with Article 70 of the Constitution of the Republic of Kazakhstan, I decide:
- Accept the resignation of the government of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
- The duties of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan shall be temporarily entrusted to Roman Vasilyevich Sklyar.
- The members of the government of the Republic of Kazakhstan will continue to perform their duties until the new composition of the government is approved.
- This decree will come into force from the date of signing."
Extended Meeting of the Government Announced
An extended meeting of the government will be held on February 7. This announcement was made during a meeting of the Senate by the Speaker of the Upper Chamber of the Parliament, Maulen Ashimbayev.
Earlier, in an interview published at the beginning of the year, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev had mentioned that an extended meeting of the government would be held. He stated that he was tasked with transitioning to a new economic model. The strategic goal is to double GDP by 2029.
“Soon, an extended meeting of the government will be held, where we will summarize the results of socio-economic development and determine the tactics of further actions in this regard,” Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said.
