Imangali Tasmagambetov, the Secretary-General of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), has underscored the escalating risk of conflicts in Central Asian countries over critical resources such as territory and water. In an interview with Igor Korotchenko, Editor-in-Chief of the National Defense magazine, Tasmagambetov emphasized the CSTO's readiness to counter these threats.
"The range of threats is expanding rapidly. If we set aside global issues and concentrate on specific regional problems, the threat of conflicts over resources should be highlighted,"
Tasmagambetov stated. He elaborated that these resources encompass territory, which can lead to border conflicts, and valuable resources such as water.
Tasmagambetov stressed the CSTO's capacity to neutralize these threats, asserting,
"Moreover, there is ample reason to believe that this potential will be bolstered, and the attractiveness of the organization itself in Eurasia will increase."
Tasmagambetov states that, CSTO analysts have identified and assessed these threats, and the close cooperation among member nations at the governmental level indicates active efforts to find solutions to these problems.
"Moreover, the CSTO's experience allows the organization to form a platform for developing methodological approaches to neutralize the mentioned threats, as well as creating an alternative resource base that will permanently remove the existing contradictions," he further stated.
Tasmagambetov outlined various tracks for addressing these challenges, including political-diplomatic efforts, information and analytical initiatives, and intermediation.
The CSTO, comprising Russia, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan, plays a crucial role in ensuring security and stability in the region amidst evolving threats and challenges.
