Director General of the Agency of Transport and Communications under the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan Mammetkhan Chakyev met with the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Infrastructure and Transport of Italy Matteo Salvini in Rome. The meeting resulted in the signing of a Memorandum on cooperation between the ports of Turkmenbashi and Naples, the Turkmenistan's Foreign Ministry reports.
"The parties discussed the possibilities of expanding cooperation in the field of railway and maritime transport." Turkmenistan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov took part in the talks.
Experts told Daryo that Turkmenistan is taking steps to join the International Maritime Organisation's (IMO) Convention for the Facilitation of Maritime Traffic. This will simplify procedures for shipping and maritime traffic in line with world standards and improve international trade.
With access to the Caspian Sea, Turkmenistan is seeking to maximise the potential of the region's international transport and transit corridors. The Caspian Sea port began operations in 2018. The $1.5bn project was implemented by Gap Inşaat (Turkey).
The total capacity of the port, excluding oil products, is 17mn tonnes of various cargoes per year. Four terminals are located on an area of more than 150 hectares: general cargo, containers, bulk cargo and car ferries.
The new infrastructure has created opportunities for Silk Road shipments from Asia and the Pacific to Europe via ports in Russia, Azerbaijan and Iran. The port can also be used as part of the transnational China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan-Turkmenistan-Azerbaijan-Georgia-Turkey-Europe route.
