The signing of the Protocol to the Partnership and Cooperation Agreement (PCA) between Turkmenistan and the EU took place at the European Union Council building in Brussels, Belgium.
Belgium currently holds the Presidency of the Council of the EU.
Turkmenistan's Foreign Ministry reports that its head, Rashid Meredov, met with Permanent Representative of Belgium to the EU Willem van de Voorde, the EU Special Representative for Central Asia Terhi Hakala, and the Chief Foreign Policy Adviser to the President of the European Council Simon Mordue.
During the recent meeting, the parties stated their interest in continuing cooperation in the field of green energy, transport, technological interconnection. "The diplomats also discussed issues on the international and regional agenda. At the same time, the positive role of Turkmenistan in maintaining security and stability in the region was especially highlighted."
Experts told Daryo that the PCA had been signed in 1998 and was awaiting ratification by the European Parliament. Since then, bilateral relations have been governed by a temporary trade agreement.
Earlier, it was reported that Turkmenistan's president Serdar Berdimuhamedov will visit the EU headquarters in Brussels at the invitation of European Council President Charles Michel.
The EU is counting on Turkmen gas supplies via the Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan and Turkey to provide energy security to the continent, which has been dependent on Russia.
In 2015, a declaration on energy cooperation between Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Turkey and the European Union was signed in Ashgabat. The document highlighted the Trans-Caspian project.
