Turkmenistan will start sowing cotton in Ahal, Balkan, Lebap and Mary regions March 20 and in Dashoguz region March 27, local TV channel Altyn Asyr reports.
During the working meeting, Deputy Prime Minister Tangryguly Atakhallyev, who oversees the agro-industrial complex, presented his report. "Agricultural machinery and units, quality seeds adapted to soil and climatic conditions of the region have been prepared."
President Serdar Berdimuhamedov noted "the importance of performing seasonal agricultural work within agrotechnical deadlines, which is one of the conditions for obtaining a rich harvest."
Turkmenistan recently raised state purchase prices for cotton to stimulate private farmers. The price of one tonne of medium-fibre cotton tripled to 5,000 manat, and one tonne of fine-fibre cotton tripled to 6,700 manat.
Experts told Daryo that in recent years the country's cotton harvest plan has been maintained at 1.2mn tonnes from 580,000 hectares of land.
Most of the raw material is used to produce local textiles, which have become "Turkmenistan's trademark". These products are ordered by a number of Western brands and distributed through the global retail chain WalMart.
Prices for these goods at auctions of the State Commodity Exchange of Turkmenistan are set in accordance with quotations of the Liverpool Cotton Agency.
