The Uzbek Ministry of Culture has discussed this year's events to be organised as part of the celebrations of the 300th anniversary of the birth of the great classical poet of the Turkmen people, Makhtumkuli Fraghi.
Turkmenistan's Foreign Ministry reports that Turkmen Ambassador Shadyrdy Meredov had met with Uzbek Minister of Culture Ozodbek Nazarbekov in this connection.
"The parties, stressing the high level of bilateral cooperation between Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, considered interaction in the cultural and humanitarian spheres."
Earlier, it was reported that Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev had ordered a series of events to be held in the country to commemorate Makhtumkuli. These include the publication of 'Selected Works', the making of a feature film with the participation of Turkmen filmmakers, the staging of a play, a national recitation competition and an international conference in Khiva on the role of Makhtumkuli's work in Uzbek culture.
Makhtumkuli's legacy is being honoured in Uzbekistan. One of the central streets of Tashkent is named in his honour. One of the first editions of his poems was published in Uzbekistan under the title 'Divan Khezreti'. The Turkmen classic once studied at the famous Shergazikhan Madrasa in Khiva and considered Alisher Navoi, after whom one of the Turkmen capital's main streets is named, his mentor.
"There is no house in our country where the poems of the classical poet and the songs based on them are not heard, and perhaps there is no Uzbek who does not know them. Over the past centuries, Makhtumkuli has become our people's own poet," the Uzbek president said in a decree published by his press service.
