In 2023, transit cargo transportation in Turkmenistan rose by 17% from 2022, due to its strategic location and improved transit potential.This information was disclosed by the official website of the State Customs Service of Turkmenistan. The upward trend continued into 2024. In the first 2M 2024, cargo transit saw an additional increase of 5% compared to the same period in the previous year.
To draw more transit cargo flows, Turkmenistan was consistently upgrading the infrastructure at its border customs posts. The implementation of automated customs clearance procedures and the deployment of state-of-the-art inspection equipment ensured seamless transportation of vehicles through border crossings.
The conducive conditions established significantly piqued the interest of international cargo carriers in transit routes through Turkmenistan. Since 2020, the total volume of transit cargo in the country surged by 206%, or threefold. Concurrently, road transportation saw a staggering increase of 585%, while rail transit volumes have grown by 104%.
