Turkmenistan is ready to supply energy carriers to Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Turkey, the newspaper "Neutral Turkmenistan" reports. Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, Chairman of Turkmenistan's People's Council (Halk Maslahaty), made the statement at the 15th meeting of the Council of Elders of the Organisation of Turkic States (OTS) in Ashgabat.
"We have good opportunities to export Turkmen natural gas and electricity to Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Turkey". The country currently supplies electricity to Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. There are also plans to implement major projects to transport Turkmen gas eastwards with the participation of these countries.
"Turkmenistan is guided by the need to make cooperation within the framework of the Organisation of Turkic States consistent and long-term, and to pay special attention to promising areas."
Berdimuhamedov also said that Turkmenistan believes it is necessary to create an effective, reliable and self-sufficient model of cooperation in the generally unstable conditions of the world energy markets. "Turkmenistan, one of the largest producers of energy resources, is ready to supply them to brotherly countries in order to increase their volumes".
The Chairman of the People's Council suggested creating a permanent integrated energy transmission system in the future. "In this case, the Turkic states will be able to take full advantage of geographical proximity, resource potential and means of supply".
Turkmenistan, one of the key players in the Central Asian energy market, saw its natural gas production grow by 6.9% and its exports by 12.6% in 2023. It produced 80.6bn cubic metres of gas in the period under review.
Turkmenistan exported gas last year to China, Russia, Azerbaijan (via Iran) and Uzbekistan. Electricity was imported by Afghanistan, Iran, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. Azerbaijan suspended a gas deal with Turkmenistan this year.
