A 4.2 magnitude earthquake struck the Caspian Sea on Friday at 19:35 local time, 105 km from Turkmenbashi (Turkmenistan). According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre, the quake occurred at a depth of 74 km.
The city of Turkmenbashi is home to an international port, the country's largest oil refinery and the Awaza resort.
Turkmenistan lies in a seismically active zone.
Studies show that the Balkan-Caspian region and the Kopetdag mountain system separating Turkmenistan from Iran are highly seismic, as evidenced by destructive earthquakes: Uzun-Ada (Krasnovodsk) in 1895, Germab in 1929, Kazanjik in 1946, Balkan in 2000.
On the night of 6 October 1948, one of the most destructive earthquakes of the XX century occurred in the capital, Ashgabat.
