The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is supporting the Ministry of Finance and Economy of Turkmenistan in enhancing national capacity for accession to the World Trade Organisation (WTO).
Turkmenistan has committed itself to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Goals (SDGs), and their implementation in national development plans, UNDP said in a press release.
This project, launched in 2018, is aimed at supporting the achievement of SDGs and is a joint platform for coordinating the work of relevant ministries and agencies of Turkmenistan and UN agencies.
The goal of the third phase of this project is to contribute to sustainable development by strengthening the capacity of the Ministry of Finance and Economy of Turkmenistan as the responsible body for coordinating activities for the implementation in Turkmenistan of the SDGs.
The project includes the following components: 1) Assisting the improvement of funding issues to strengthen the financial basis underpinning national development strategies in the context of the SDGs implementation; 2) enhancing national capacity on WTO accession.
Turkmenistan is the last former Soviet republic to start WTO accession negotiations in February 2022.
Experts told Daryo that the country is currently working on a Memorandum on foreign trade regime. The submission of this document is one of the conditions for WTO accession. It will require Ashgabat to liberalise trade by removing barriers such as import tariffs, quotas, export subsidies, dumping practices and other rules that restrict the free flow of trade.
