Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS) reports that it has held talks with Turkmen officials on the implementation of the Noorul-Jihad substation project in Afghanistan's Herat province.
The parties also discussed the electricity transmission from Turkmenistan and the provision of necessary equipment. A joint protocol was signed at the end of the meeting. The project will increase the capacity of Noorul-Jihad from 70 megawatts to 110 megawatts. The new transformer will alleviate power shortages in this industrial region.
Afghanistan imports more than 80% of its electricity from Central Asia and Iran. Until recently, almost half of its needs were supplied by Uzbekistan, which is now focusing on domestic energy consumption due to an industrial boom. Turkmenistan provided 20% of Afghanistan's electricity, and talks are under way to increase supplies.
Experts told Daryo that in recent years Ashgabat had built the Turkmen-Afghan power lines Imamnazar-Andkhoy, Serhetabat-Herat and Rabatkashan-Kalainau and to Mazar-e-Sharif at its own expense.
All these directions fit into the concept of the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan (TAP) transmission line project. According to various estimates, transit services could generate more than $100mn a year for the Afghan treasury. This transnational project was entrusted to the Turkish company Çalık Energy.
