A regular meeting of the working groups of the Joint Uzbekistan-Turkmenistan Demarcation Commission was held in Turkmenabat, Lebap region of Turkmenistan. The Uzbek Foreign Ministry says the parties continued their work in this area. "The meeting took place in an atmosphere of friendship and mutual understanding."
Earlier it was reported that the sides were finalising and agreeing draft legal and technical documents on the issue. Negotiations on legal registration of the 1,650-km-long Turkmen-Uzbek border began after the state visit of Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev to Turkmenistan on 6-7 March 2017.
Specialists from the two countries have since then conducted field aerial surveying and topographic-geodetic works on certain sections of the common border.
Both sides of the border are home to significant diasporas of ethnic Uzbeks in Turkmenistan (about 300,000) and Turkmens in Uzbekistan (about 200,000). Ashgabat and Tashkent have agreed to create a border trade zone that will cover the two countries' contiguous territory - on the border of Turkmenistan's Dashoguz region and Uzbekistan's Khorezm region.
