Turkmenistan's Ambassador Shadurdy Meredov met in Tashkent with Nabikhon Samatov, Deputy Chairman of the Board of the Uzbek Republican Commodity Exchange Joint Stock Company (JSC). According to the Turkmen Foreign Ministry, the sides discussed the issues of developing trade and economic potential and increasing trade turnover between the two countries.
It is expected that the next meeting of the intergovernmental commission, the business council, industrial exhibitions and a forum of the border regions of the two countries will contribute to achieving this goal.
At 1,650km, the border with Uzbekistan is Turkmenistan's longest. In recent years, Uzbekistan has switched to direct purchases of Turkmen energy resources.
Between 2017 and 2023, two-way trade has more than quintupled, reaching $1.094bn at the end of last year.
Ashgabat and Tashkent have agreed to create a border trade zone that will cover the neighbouring territory of Turkmenistan's Dashoguz region and Uzbekistan's Khorezm region. A similar joint project is being developed on the borders of the Lebap region of Turkmenistan and the Bukhara region of Uzbekistan.
More than 46,000 citizens of Turkmenistan visited Uzbekistan for business purposes last year, topping this list.
The Declaration on deepening the strategic partnership between Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan, signed in October 2022, has given a new impetus to bilateral relations.
