Uzbekistan witnessed a significant influx of mobile phones in 2023, with the importation of 3.4 mn units valued at $240.1mn, according to the latest report from the National Statistics Agency.
Comparing these figures to the preceding year, there was a notable surge in mobile phone imports, reflecting a growth of 476,000 units or 13.7%.
The breakdown of smartphone imports reveals key contributors to Uzbekistan's thriving mobile phone market. In 2023, imports were sourced from various countries:
- China: 3.1 mn units
- Vietnam: 276,800 units
- India: 37,200 thousand units
- UAE: 7,800 units
Additionally, an announcement has been made regarding the implementation of mandatory regulations in Uzbekistan for declaring newly imported mobile phones.
Here are the key points to be aware of:
- Phone import limits eased: Starting from January 28, 2024, individuals, including both citizens and foreigners, will be permitted to bring in up to two cell phones via the country's air harbours at each border crossing. These devices must not exceed a combined value of $2,000.
- Exceed the limit, pay the price: Should the total value of the phones surpass this limit, a hefty 30% fee will be imposed on the excess amount. It is a move designed to curb extravagant phone imports.
