Uzbekistan implements stricter rules on phone imports and IMEI codes

Uzbekistan has introduced mandatory rules for declaring imported new mobile phones, ushering in a new era of regulation for travellers and citizens alike. The Ministry of Digital Development has also simplified the registration process for IMEI codes in Uzbekistan.

Here is what you need to know:

Phone import limits eased: Starting January 28, 2024, individuals, both citizens and foreigners, will be allowed to bring in two cell phones through the country's air harbours at each border crossing. These devices should be at most a combined value of $2,000.

Exceed the limit, pay the price: Should the total value of the phones surpass this limit, a hefty 30% fee will be imposed on the excess amount. It is a move designed to curb extravagant phone imports.

No changes for mail or couriers: Notably, these new regulations will not affect goods arriving through international postal services or courier shipments.

IMEI codes under the scanner: The Ministry of Digital Development has also simplified the registration process for IMEI codes in Uzbekistan. This essential step ensures your mobile device is on the right side of the law.

Red corridor and customs declaration: As part of the changes, individuals importing new mobile devices will now be required to pass through the "red" corridor and complete a customs declaration. The rules are clear, and enforcement is strict.

Extended grace period for foreigners: For foreigners, the grace period to use mobile devices without registering the IMEI code has been extended from 30 to 60 days. Stay in the know and avoid any surprises.

IMEI stands for International Mobile Equipment Identity. It is a unique 15-digit identification number assigned to each mobile device, including smartphones and cellular tablets. The IMEI code serves as a digital fingerprint for the device. It is used for various purposes, including device identification, lost or stolen device tracking, warranty and repair, network activation, regulatory compliance, and security.
