Buckingham Palace announces King Charles III's cancer diagnosis

Buckingham Palace announces King Charles III's cancer diagnosis

Buckingham Palace stated on February 5 revealing that King Charles III has been diagnosed with cancer and has initiated treatment. The 75-year-old monarch, less than 18 months into his reign, will temporarily suspend public duties while maintaining engagement in state affairs. Importantly, he will retain his constitutional role as the head of state during this period.

Nature of cancer and previous health concerns

While the palace did not disclose the specific form of cancer, they clarified that it is unrelated to the king's recent treatment for a benign prostate condition. A separate issue of concern arose during Charles' treatment for an enlarged prostate last month, prompting diagnostic tests that identified the current cancer diagnosis.

The palace emphasized that King Charles III would continue with state business and official paperwork as usual. Despite undergoing treatment as an outpatient, he remains positive about his health and anticipates a prompt return to full public duty. The decision to share the diagnosis was made to prevent speculation and to contribute to a broader understanding of cancer, the statement noted.

The news of King Charles III's diagnosis follows the recent health announcement concerning Kate, Princess of Wales, who is recovering from abdominal surgery. The king personally informed immediate family members, including Prince William, who will preside over an investiture ceremony at Buckingham Palace on Febryary 8.

    International support and family response

U.K. political leaders, including Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, expressed support for the monarch's recovery. President Joe Biden, currently in Las Vegas, conveyed his concern and expressed a desire to speak with King Charles III. The king's son, Prince Harry, is set to travel to the U.K. in the coming days to visit his father.

King Charles III's openness about his health, notably regarding his prostate condition, deviates from historical royal practices of maintaining silence on health matters. The monarch's decision to share his diagnosis is seen as a departure from centuries-old traditions of secrecy surrounding the health of the royal family.

Pat Price, founder of the Catch Up With Cancer campaign, acknowledged the collective concern for the king's health. Price emphasized the power of the king's openness, serving as a reminder that a significant portion of the population may face similar health challenges.
