Uzbekistan has witnessed a notable increase in official phone imports, with a rise of 18% recorded since the beginning of the year. According to the Statistics Agency, approximately 2.6 mn mobile phones were imported into the country between January and September, marking a significant growth compared to the same period in 2022.
The total value of these imports reached $178.2 mn, reflecting a 23.3% increase from the previous year. The last two months alone saw the import of around 700 thousand devices, amounting to $48 mn.
China continues to be the dominant supplier of phones to Uzbekistan, accounting for 2.3 mn imported devices since the start of the year. This figure represents a substantial increase of over 40% compared to the previous year. Vietnam also experienced a similar trend, with imports of 223.1 thousand phones in the nine months, reflecting a growth rate of 42.5%.
Phone imports from India have decreased significantly, with only 32.5 thousand devices imported during the same period. Recent months have witnessed a surge in phone imports from Dubai, with approximately 5.8 thousand devices imported, tripling the previous seven-month figure. Supplies from Kazakhstan have reached their lowest point, with only 2.5 thousand phones imported.
In response to the growing demand for phones, the Uzbekistan Cabinet of Ministers adopted a resolution in October to streamline the import process. As per the resolution, individuals will be allowed to bring in two devices worth up to $2,000 each duty-free via airports, provided they declare the devices at the border crossings.
