Tajikistan’s Minister of Energy and Water Resources, Daler Juma, has disclosed the country’s intentions to import over 250mn m³ of natural gas from Uzbekistan in 2024, ASIA-Plus News Agency reported. The two parties have already formalised this agreement earlier this year.
In 2023, Tajikistan imported 219mn m³ of Uzbek gas, marking an increase of 26.5mn m³ from the previous year. The primary recipients of the imported gas are currently the Tajik Aluminium Company, Azot, and the Dushanbe-2 Thermal Power Plant (TPP).
Challenges in Gas Supply
Juma acknowledged that while the supply of Uzbek gas is generally consistent, minor issues occasionally arise during the cold season when the demand for fuel surges. However, these issues are promptly addressed and resolved.
It is worth noting that Tajikistan resumed natural gas imports from Uzbekistan in April 2018, following a six-year hiatus.
Potential for Domestic Gas Supply
The management of the gas distribution company, Tajiktransgaz, had previously stated that they were considering the possibility of supplying gas to the domestic population. However, there were certain challenges, particularly related to infrastructure readiness, which required some time to address.
