In response to the accident at the Bishkek Thermal Power Plant (TPP), Uzbekistan has dispatched 1,000 cylinders of liquefied natural gas to Kyrgyzstan. The aid was delivered to the city of Jalal-Abad on February 3, using nine cargo vehicles.
The republican headquarters under the Kyrgyz government confirmed that the gas cylinders will be transported from Jalal-Abad to Bishkek shortly.
International support
Before this, the President of Turkmenistan had expressed his intention to provide humanitarian aid to Kyrgyzstan in the form of liquefied natural gas.
Accident
On February 2, a significant accident occurred at Bishkek’s primary energy facility, the local TPP. As a result, hot water and partial heating services were disrupted in the city, as reported by Kyrgyz energy authorities.
Efforts are underway to restore resources for the population within two to three days. The accident, which occurred during the night and early morning, resulted in a fire at the thermal power plant. The fire was successfully extinguished by several squads.
Five individuals were injured in the incident, with two in extremely serious condition and one in a state of medium severity. All victims suffered burns.
Government response
In response to the crisis, Kyrgyz Prime Minister Akylbek Zhaparov urgently returned to Bishkek from Almaty, where he was scheduled to participate in a meeting of the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council.
