From January 31 to February 1, 2024, experts from the ministries and departments of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member states convened in a virtual meeting under the chairmanship of Kazakhstan, Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources reported. As the current chair of the SCO since July 2023, Kazakhstan led discussions on vital environmental issues.
During the meeting, several draft documents were deliberated, including joint approaches to solving environmental problems, an Action Plan for the implementation of the Concept of cooperation in the environmental protection field for 2025-2027, a Plan of joint actions for the SCO Green Belt program (2024-2026), and a Statement on effective waste management by the Council of Heads of SCO Member States.
The Kazakh side also announced the completion of the draft Agreement between the governments of the SCO member states on cooperation in environmental protection. They urged all parties to initiate internal approval procedures for the draft Agreement.
Additionally, Kazakhstan shared updates on the preparations for the SCO-UN Special Event: "One Planet, One Future: Joining Efforts for Environmental Sustainability." This event is scheduled to take place in Nairobi on February 28, 2024, within the framework of the 5th session of the UN Assembly on the Environment.
The meeting concluded with the signing of a protocol outlining the agreements and discussions held during the gathering of experts from the SCO member states responsible for environmental issues.
