The U.S. Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) has revealed that the U.S. sends $80mn every two weeks to Afghanistan, which is currently under the control of the Taliban.
As per SIGAR, this cash aid is kept weekly by the UN Office in Afghanistan (UNMA) in designated private bank accounts. The aid packages have been presented as humanitarian cash aid since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan.
However, about a year later, due to widespread criticism of the sending or receiving of this monetary aid, it was not reported in the media. Critics argue that the aid could be misused or diverted by the Taliban, undermining its intended humanitarian purpose.
U.S. Aid to Afghanistan: A Historical Perspective
Despite the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Afghanistan, the United States remains the largest donor to the Afghan people. Over the years, the United States has appropriated or otherwise made available $11.1bn in assistance to Afghanistan and to Afghan refugees. This includes nearly $2.5bn in U.S. appropriations for Afghanistan assistance, largely for humanitarian and development aid.
