Afghanistan recorded a trade volume of $100 mn with Turkey in 2023, with $23 mn attributed to exports from Afghanistan, according to the Ministry of Industry and Commerce. The Deputy Prime Minister for Administrative Affairs, Abdul Salam Hanafi, highlighted the commitment to fostering trade and investment during a meeting with Turkish businessmen, emphasizing the availability of facilities to enhance bilateral trade, TOLO News reported.
Abdul Salam Hanafi articulated that all necessary facilities have been provided to facilitate an increase in trade between Afghanistan and Turkey. He further encouraged Turkish businessmen to explore investment opportunities across various sectors in Afghanistan, including mining, manufacturing factories, agriculture, energy, and technology.
The Chamber of Commerce and Investment in Afghanistan revealed plans to establish a joint chamber with Turkey. The envisaged joint chamber is expected to play a pivotal role in facilitating and promoting bilateral trade activities.
Mohammad Younus Momand, the acting head of the Chamber of Commerce and Investment, emphasized the strategic significance of railway projects connecting Afghanistan to Turkey. He highlighted the cost-effectiveness of such projects and their potential to enhance global connectivity, emphasizing the Chamber's vision for regional and global projects through railway infrastructure.
While discussing the economic prospects, some experts underscored the importance of the Islamic Emirate engaging with the international community to attract additional investment. Economic expert Abdul Naseer Rishtia emphasized that increased economic and political interaction with regional and neighboring countries could pave the way for solving Afghanistan's economic challenges.
Prior to these developments, a delegation led by the Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, engaged in discussions with Turkish officials during a trip to Turkey. The discussions centered on the development of trade and explored avenues for enhanced economic collaboration between the two nations.
The trade turnover between Uzbekistan and Afghanistan witnessed a substantial surge, reaching $266 mn in 2023, marking a sixfold increase from the previous year. Uzbekistan predominantly supplied electricity, fertilizers, and hydrocarbons, while Afghanistan's exports to Uzbekistan included dried fruits, juices, and carpets. This significant boost in bilateral trade underscores the growing economic partnership between the two nations, contributing to Afghanistan's overall export growth of 2% to $1.9 bn in 2023.
Earlier Daryo reported that in 2023, Afghanistan's trade with Turkmenistan reached $481mn. A meeting in Kabul with Turkmenistan's Ambassador Hoja Ovezov focused on discussions about increasing Afghan marble exports to Turkmenistan and organizing an exhibition of Afghan products in Ashgabat.
