During his visit to Turkmenistan, Iranian Oil Minister Javad Owji focused his discussions on expanding cooperation in the areas of gas trade, oil derivatives, and the export of technical engineering services and oil equipment.
IRNA reports that he met in Ashgabat with President Serdar Berdimuhamedov, Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov and Batyr Amanov, Deputy Prime Minister in charge of Turkmenistan's energy sector.
Local TV channel Altyn Asyr reports that during the meeting with Berdimuhamedov, a particular topic of discussion was "cooperation in the oil and gas sector, for the expansion of which, according to the consensus, new opportunities are opening up."
The head of state expressed Turkmenistan's readiness to consider all proposals and initiatives of Iranian partners, noting that "exchange of views between specialists in this sphere will be useful for finding new forms and methods of cooperation and their practical implementation."
Experts told Daryo that Turkmen gas can be delivered to Iran through two pipelines, with the main route being the 200km Korpeje-Kurt-Kui branch, which was commissioned in 1997.
Since 2022, Iran's territory has been used to supply natural gas from Turkmenistan to Azerbaijan on a reimbursable basis. Under an open-ended contract, Iran received contracted volumes from Serakhs in Turkmenistan to deliver its equivalent to Astara in Azerbaijan.
These transit services helped to supply natural gas to Iranian provinces such as Rezavi, North and South Khorasan, Golestan and Semnan, which are remote from national gas resources.
The trilateral system was suspended earlier this year. According to the Iranian side, the terms of the deal are being discussed between the seller and the buyer. Iraq, which last year began talks on receiving up to 9bn cubic metres of Turkmen gas a year via Iran, wants a similar swap.
