The second dust storm since the beginning of the year hit southern and south-eastern Turkmenistan on 9 January, the Meteorological Journal (Russia) reports.
Turkmenistan is home to the Karakum Desert, which covers 350,000 km², a large part of the country's territory.
According to the information, since October 2022, Turkmenistan has been experiencing an unusually high frequency of various dust events, mainly in the south and south-east. On 9 January, dust storms affected most of Mary province, the southern and central districts of Lebap, and the extreme southeast of Ahal.
A severe dust storm was observed in Serhetabad city for almost 15 hours, with visibility reduced to 500 metres. In Bairamali city, dust haze reduced visibility to 1000 metres. Heavy dust haze also covered the regional centre of Lebap – Turkmenabad city, with visibility reduced to 200 metres.
Warm air is expected to cover the entire southern region of Turkmenistan on 13 January, with temperatures reaching +20°C. In some places, winds will increase to 11-16 m/s, accompanied by a dust storm.
At the same time, another invasion of cold air from the European part of Russia is expected in the north and northwest of the country.
