Two students from the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) are set to embark on a month-long teaching mission at Seitkamzy Lastayev’s secondary school in the village of Katon-Karagai, located in the East Kazakhstan region, Sustainable Development Fund for Education reported. This initiative is part of MIT's Global Teaching Labs (GTL) program, which challenges students to learn through teaching, fostering knowledge synthesis, teamwork, and cultural exchange.
The village's school, named after Seitkamzy Lastayev, proudly became the first rural public school to participate in the MIT GTL program. The selection process was rigorous, with the school submitting its application in May 2023 and being shortlisted alongside some of the strongest schools in Kazakhstan, including Tamos Education (Astana and Almaty), Haileybury (Astana and Almaty), and Shoqan School in Almaty.
Following the selection, a Memorandum was signed between the Fund for Sustainable Development of Education (FURO) and MIT GTL, solidifying the partnership. Alexander-Eduard Shertsnev and Hanna Park, MIT students, will lead workshops for Katon-Karagai schoolchildren, focusing on programming, physics, and information technology. The duo will immerse themselves in the local community, residing in the village for a total of 26 days.
MIT, renowned for its excellence in science, engineering, and technology, consistently ranks among the top universities globally. The collaboration with Katon-Karagai's school signifies a remarkable opportunity for cultural exchange and educational enrichment.
The Seitkamzy Lastayev school has been an active participant in the "Rural School Powered by Nazarbayev Intellectual Schools (NIS)" project for five years. With support from the Foundation for Sustainable Development of Education, AITAS Holding, and Nazarbayev Intellectual Schools, the school has witnessed improvements, including the update of educational classrooms since 2019, with ongoing methodological support from NIS. This collaborative effort aims to enhance the quality of education in rural areas and provide students with exposure to global educational standards.
