In response to the pressing environmental challenges posed by the drained day of the Aral Sea, a significant meeting was convened under the leadership of Yerlan Nyssanbayev, the Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The gathering focused on the implementation of the state directive to establish Saxaul plantations on the desiccated shores of the Aral Sea, the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan reported.
The event brought together specialists from the Committee of Forestry and Wildlife, representatives of the Kyzylorda Regional Territorial Inspectorate of Forestry and Wildlife, the Republican Breeding and Seen Production Center, the akimat (mayor) of the Kyzylorda region, the management of natural resources and regulation of nature management, and the Kazakh Scientific Research Institute of Forestry.
Deputy head of the republican headquarters overseeing the Saxaul plantation initiative, Gaziz Alibi, provided an overview of the progress made from 2021 to 2023.
"In 2021, 500,000 hectares of land were incorporated from the water fund of the drained bottom of the Aral Sea, becoming part of the state forest fund of the Aral Forestry Institution. Forest reclamation work commenced on the newly annexed lands since 2023," he emphasized.
The changing climatic conditions and the increased frequency of storms have led to wind-borne salt and dust causing considerable damage to areas surrounding the Aral Sea. Each year, over 100 mn tons of salt, dust, and sand are released into the air from the dry Aral Sea bed.
Ruslan Akhmetov, Director of the Almaty branch of the Kazakh Research Institute of Forestry named after A. Bokeikhan, presented a report outlining several proposals for phytomelioration (soil improvement through vegetation) of the drained Aral Sea bed.
Minister Nyssanbayev underscored the importance of executing phytoreclamation work meticulously and promptly. He emphasized the need to adhere to the instructions of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan to enhance the environmental conditions in the Aral region. The ongoing efforts aim to mitigate the environmental impact and restore the ecological balance in the wake of the Aral Sea's dramatic reduction.
