In a decisive move towards meeting the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Kazakhstan announced the approval of an ambitious plan for 2024 during the 7th meeting of the Coordinating Council for the United Nations (Coordinated UN Response, CUR). Chaired by Prime Minister Alikhan Smailov, the discussions centered on recalibrating national indicators to align with global benchmarks for sustainable development, an official information source of the Prime Minister of Kazakhstan reported.
The meeting, attended by heads of central state bodies, UN representatives, and officials from the European Union, highlighted the necessity to reassess and revise national indicators to enhance the effectiveness of Kazakhstan's efforts in achieving the SDGs. Among the proposed additions were indicators concerning the percentage of the population immunized by all vaccines, instances of domestic violence against women, and the volume of greenhouse gas emissions.
Prime Minister Smailov stressed the importance of incorporating these revised indicators to align with international standards and improve the quality of life for the citizens of Kazakhstan. He emphasized that sustainable development is a national priority, reiterating the commitment made by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev during the UN summit on sustainable development targets in the previous year.
"In his speech, the president noted that the achievement of the CUR is a national priority for us. Therefore, we are always open to cooperation with all member states in the desire for a more just and sustainable world," stated Prime Minister Smailov.
The meeting also delved into discussions about integrating SPUR (Sustainable Progress Under Review) indicators into strategic programs and documents of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Additionally, there was a focus on localizing and implementing these indicators at the regional level to ensure a comprehensive and inclusive approach to sustainable development across the country.
The Coordinating Council, after thorough deliberation, approved a detailed plan for the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals for the year 2024. Prime Minister Smailov urged state bodies to ensure the timely and high-quality execution of the plan, setting specific tasks to be accomplished throughout the year.
"Today we have set specific tasks that must be completed sequentially during the year," concluded Prime Minister Smailov, underscoring the commitment of Kazakhstan to achieving the SDGs.
The United Nations adopted the Sustainable Development Goals in 2015 as a global initiative to eradicate poverty and inequality, protect the environment, and ensure the prosperity of the planet. Comprising 17 distinct areas, the goals aim to spur development across key economic and social sectors. The progress in achieving the CUR is subject to continuous monitoring by representatives from the UN and the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Sustainable Development in Uzbekistan: A Commitment to the 2030 Agenda
Uzbekistan has reaffirmed its dedication to realizing the global 2030 Agenda by adopting a comprehensive, collaborative approach towards achieving sixteen national Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The government's commitment was reinforced in October 2018 through the endorsement of a resolution on the 2030 Agenda, ensuring SDGs integration into national strategies and programs across all ministries.
Having joined the United Nations in 1992, Uzbekistan established the United Nations Office in Tashkent the following year. The United Nations Country Team (UNCT) in Uzbekistan, consisting of 25 UN Agencies, Funds, and Programmes, collaborates to advance national development priorities aligned with Agenda 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals.
In September 2020, the UN Country Team finalized the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (2021-2025), receiving endorsement and signing by the Uzbekistan government. The Cooperation Framework outlines the collective UN response to supporting Uzbekistan in achieving its national SDGs, focusing on effective governance, inclusive human capital development, and sustainable, climate-responsible, and resilient development.
