For the first 10M 2023, Uzbekistan welcomed a staggering 4.9 mn foreign tourists. This figure represents a nearly threefold increase over the past three years, with the number of foreign tourists in 2021 standing at 1.8 mn.
Domestic tourism trends
A recent online survey conducted by IMRS experts assessed the state of domestic tourism in Uzbekistan. The survey, which included 1,282 respondents from all regions, revealed that nearly 50% of all tourist trips within the country are made to four regions. Specifically, residents of the country most frequently travel to Tashkent (11.4%), Tashkent region (10.6%), Bukhara (9.4%), and Samarkand (5.8%).
In terms of travel arrangements, 81.2% of respondents reported that they travel independently, while 15.5% travel as part of organized trips from their place of work. A smaller percentage, 2.4%, travel through tour operators. As for transportation, 56.8% travel by private car and 17.3% by train.
Global recognition
In 2023, Uzbekistan earned a spot on the list of the 50 best tourist destinations in the world according to the American online guide Travel Lemming, securing the 9th place. This guide, which highlights new and unique destinations around the world each year, boasts a readership of over 6 mn travelers.
Economic Impact
Travel exports for the first 10M 2023 totalled $1.8bn, a significant increase compared to $1.04bn in 2018. With the expected surge in the total number of travellers in 2023, tourism services exports are projected to reach $2bn.
