Alisher Usmanov, a prominent billionaire, has seen a decrease in his fortune since the beginning of 2024. His assets, which were estimated at $21.1bn last year, have now fallen to $20.8bn. Despite this, Usmanov still holds a significant position in the global wealth rankings, securing the 86th spot among the world’s 500 richest people according to Bloomberg Billionaires Index.
Discrepancies in net worth estimations
Interestingly, there seems to be a discrepancy between Bloomberg’s and Forbes’ estimations of Usmanov’s net worth. While Bloomberg estimates his fortune to be $20.8bn, Forbes estimates it to be significantly lower at $14.4bn. This discrepancy could be due to different methodologies used by the two publications in calculating net worth.
Usmanov’s move to Tashkent
Since 2023, Usmanov has been residing in Tashkent. In an interview with the Italian channel TGcom24, he expressed his ambition of investing in the Uzbek economy, calling it a “great goal”. This move aligns with his broader strategy of diversifying his investments and contributing to the economic development of his home country.
Investments in Uzbekistan
Usmanov has been actively investing in various sectors of the Uzbek economy. His investments range from the metallurgical industry to the media sector. He has also shown interest in cotton processing, the production of fruits and vegetables, and the development of the country’s mining resources.
In 2017, Usmanov attracted the foreign company SFI Management Group to manage the Uzbek Metallurgical Combine. After an additional infusion of $50mn, the plant came out of stagnation. He also invested more than $100mn for restoration and construction works in Tashkent, Samarkand and Bukhara regions.
