On January 1, 2024, a devastating earthquake of magnitude 7.6 struck the Noto Peninsula of Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan. The earthquake, officially named the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake, resulted in significant loss of life and property. As of January 3rd, the death toll had risen to at least 73 people, with many more injured and missing.
President Tokayev’s message of condolence
In the wake of this disaster, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev of Kazakhstan has expressed his condolences to Prime Minister Fumio Kishida of Japan. In his telegram, President Tokayev stated that he received the news of the disaster with deep sorrow. He expressed his condolences on behalf of the people of Kazakhstan and himself to the families who have lost loved ones.
President Tokayev also wished a speedy recovery to all victims and expressed hope for the safe return of missing citizens to their families.
"I received with deep sorrow the news about the devastating natural disaster in your country, as a result of which a large number of people died and suffered. On behalf of the people of Kazakhstan and my behalf, I express my condolences to you and the families who have lost loved ones. I wish a speedy recovery to all victims and safe return of missing citizens to their families," Tokayev stated.

The international community has been quick to respond to the disaster, with rescue operations ongoing and support pouring in from around the world.
