Flocks of green parrots have been spotted in the Turkmen capital. They have taken over two avenues named after Atamurat Niyazov and Bairam Khan, Ashgabat Park and the Tekin Bazaar area, reports Turkmenportal.
Reader Maria Ladyseva sent her photo observations to the editorial office. A flock of birds exotic for local areas started arriving to the alley in late summer and "feel at ease".
The Society for Nature Conservation of Turkmenistan began to record them here a few years ago.
Specialists identified them as Kramer's parrots and were surprised that these heat-loving individuals had managed to adapt to the rather cool winter conditions in Ashgabat, where the temperature can drop to minus degrees at night.
It has been suggested that the birds once escaped from their cages and survived in the urban environment thanks to the dense greenery of the treetops. Their population has increased significantly over the years.
