In Brussels (Belgium), during a meeting of the joint "Turkmenistan-European Union" committee, the issues of gas export strategies, initiatives to reduce methane emissions and the development of renewable energy sources, including hydrogen, were discussed.
The Foreign Ministry of Turkmenistan reports that meetings were held with representatives of various European Commission directorates dealing with trade, energy, mobility and transport, climate change, environment and innovation.
The Turkmen delegation, led by the Minister of Finance and Economy, Serdar Jorayev, included the heads of the state-owned company Turkmengaz and a number of relevant ministries.
"The meeting discussed the macroeconomic situation of Turkmenistan and its aspirations for integration into the global economy, especially in the context of the country's aspirations for membership in the World Trade Organization (WTO)."
Turkmenistan has the world's fourth largest proven natural gas reserves. Importers include China, Russia, Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan.
Experts told Daryo that the Trans-Caspian project to Europe could be on the agenda during Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov's planned visit to EU headquarters.
The project to build a 300 km gas pipeline from Turkmenistan to Europe via Azerbaijan and Turkey has become a hot topic after the EU decided to wean itself off its critical dependence on Gazprom in the wake of Russia's military action against Ukraine from February 2022.
Turkmenistan, for its part, already in 2015 built a 700-km linear gas pipeline to the Caspian Sea coast, originating in Galkynysh. Ashgabat is ready to supply Europe with up to 30bn cubic metres of gas a year.
