The EU welcomes Turkmenistan's accession to the Global Methane Pledge, according to a press release following a conference held in Mary as part of the "European Union-Turkmenistan: Sustainable Energy Days 2023" campaign.
Beata Peksa, EU Ambassador to Turkmenistan, stated: "With the great appreciation, we welcomed the announcement of the decision of the Government of Turkmenistan to join the Global Methane Pledge and other commitments made at the COP28."
The diplomat said that "now is the right time to discuss the way forward with key national stakeholders, international donors, and partners."
The information said the country has an abundant solar energy potential estimated at 655 GW.
"The development of the renewable energy sector, improvement of energy efficiency and reduction of methane emissions would significantly contribute to the environmental protection, meeting the population’s growing energy demand and enhancing energy security."
Furthermore, the country would be able to fulfil its climate targets, achieving zero growth of greenhouse gas emissions starting in 2030, and significant reductions of emissions in the longer term.
Turkmenistan is one of the region's main suppliers of natural gas, which is bought by China, Russia, Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan. Experts told Daryo that the leaks are mainly due to the deterioration of oil and gas pipelines and the release of unwanted methane gas, which is produced along with oil, into the atmosphere.
According to local energy companies, the country is taking measures to increase the use of associated petroleum gas and reduce natural gas losses during extraction, transportation, storage and processing.
