The Merchant Marine of Turkmenistan reports that from January to November 2023, the total volume of international cargo traffic increased by 21.6% compared to a year earlier, totalling 2mn 064 tonnes.
The number of TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) containers transported through the port of Turkmenbashi increased by 277.3% year-on-year to 3,846 units.
A total of 1.884mn tonnes of cargo was transported during the reporting period. Cargo turnover since the beginning of the year reached 867.149mn tonne-km, which is 19.1% higher than last year's figure. Accordingly, passenger traffic increased by 56.4%.
The modern Caspian port, which has expanded access to European countries and markets in the Middle East, began operations in 2018. The $1.5bn project was implemented by Gap Inşaat (Turkey).
Its total capacity, excluding oil products, is 17mn tonnes of various cargoes per year. There are four terminals on an area of more than 150 hectares: general cargo, containers, bulk cargo and car ferries.
Experts told Daryo that Ashgabat and Tashkent are discussing options for creating favourable conditions for cooperation, suggesting that Turkmenbashi Port could be used as part of the transnational route China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan-Turkmenistan-Azerbaijan-Georgia-Turkey-Europe.
