Trade turnover between Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan totalled $970.1mn in January-November 2023, up from $877.5mn a year earlier and $761.2mn in 2021, according to the Uzbek Presidential Statistics Agency.
Uzbekistan imported $809.6mn worth of products from Turkmenistan and exported $160.6mn worth of products to the country. Turkmenistan ranks sixth among Uzbekistan's trading partners. China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkey, South Korea and Russia top the list.
In recent years, Uzbekistan has switched to direct purchases of Turkmen energy. Last year, two-way trade between the neighbouring countries amounted to $926.3mn, five times more than in 2017.
Ashgabat and Tashkent have agreed to create a border trade zone that will cover the neighbouring territory of Turkmenistan's Dashoguz region and Uzbekistan's Khorezm region. A similar joint project is being developed near the borders of Turkmenistan's Lebap region and Uzbekistan's Bukhara region.
Some 40,000 Turkmen citizens have visited Uzbekistan for business since the beginning of the year, topping the list of foreign business travellers.
