Work has begun on a project to build an electricity transmission line from Turkmenistan to Afghanistan, to Jawzjan and from there to Baghlan and Kabul, TOLOnews reports.
At its launching ceremony, Afghanistan's First Deputy Prime Minister Abdul Ghani Baradar said that "with the implementation of this project, 500 kilovolts of power will be imported and hundreds of organizations will be provided with electricity. It will also provide electricity in the southern provinces through Kabul."
Abdul Qahar Abid, an official of Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS) said that this will help import 1,000 megawatts of electricity at less prices. Afghanistan also buys electricity from other Central Asian countries and Iran.
Experts told Daryo that in recent years Turkmenistan has built the Turkmen-Afghan power lines Imamnazar-Andkhoy, Serhetabat-Herat and Rabatkashan-Kalainau and towards the city of Mazar-e-Sharif at its own expense.
All these directions fit into the concept of the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan (TAP) transmission line project. According to various estimates, transit services could generate more than $100mn a year for the Afghan treasury.
