Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi during a telephone conversation with his Turkmen counterpart Serdar Berdimuhamedov stressing "on the need to speed up the implementation of the important agreements of the meeting of the Joint Commission of Economic Cooperation in the field of energy, transportation and transit," his press service reports.
He also emphasised the development of cooperation between Tehran and Ashgabat in the transport and transit sector by utilising the capacity of Iran's southern ports, including Bandar Abbas and Chabahar Port.
The Iranian side announced readiness to promote cooperation between the two countries in the fields of electricity and gas.
Berdimuhamedov said his country "attaches great importance to the consistent building up and strengthening of multi-vector relations with Iran," state Turkmenistan's state agency reports.
"The gas sphere is one of the main areas of this co-operation. The issue of supplying Turkmen natural gas to Iran and through it to third countries through the SWAP system should be highlighted here."
Experts told Daryo that the Trade Promotion Organisation of Iran (TPOI) recently announced that it would send a trade representative to Turkmenistan to strengthen bilateral ties.
According to the Iranian side, the volume of trade exchanges between Iran and Turkmenistan is estimated at $500mn in 2022. The two neighbours recently concluded a series of energy and transport deals worth about $1bn in Ashgabat.
Iran and Turkmenistan, neighbours on the Caspian Sea with a land border of more than 1,100km, plan to sign a 20-year cooperation agreement in the near future.
