According to data from the National Statistical Committee, Kyrgyzstan has witnessed a significant reduction in coal imports, with figures nearly halving. From January to September 2023, the republic imported 469,500 tons of coal, a stark contrast to the 821,500 tons imported during the same period the previous year. This includes 459,400 tons of solid fuel and 10,100 tons of brown coal.
The majority of this imported coal originates from neighbouring Kazakhstan. As the winter season approaches, the Ministry of Energy has outlined plans to supply the Bishkek Combined Heat and Power Plant (CHPP) with 1.2 mn tons of solid fuel to ensure electricity and heat provision. This supply includes 550,000 tons of imported brand D coal.
This decrease in coal imports comes when Kyrgyzstan is grappling with energy challenges. The country relies heavily on hydropower, but a severe drought has led to concerns about potential energy crises. As a result, the government is exploring ways to increase the efficiency of coal burning at the Bishkek CHPP.
