Turkmenistan has received a certificate from the World Health Organization (WHO) for meeting regional targets for eliminating hepatitis B through immunisation, local TV channel Altyn Asyr reports.
"This achievement is of great importance for achieving the goal of eliminating viral hepatitis as a public health threat throughout the European Region". The country is paying particular attention to introducing innovative methods of disease prevention, diagnosis and treatment, and to training highly qualified professionals.
Hepatitis B is a viral infectious disease of the liver that can be acute or chronic. The disease is preventable with safe and effective vaccines that provide almost 100% protection against the virus.
In Turkmenistan, universal hepatitis vaccination of newborns and children under one year of age has been implemented since 2002.
The majority of people currently living with in the WHO European Region are adults born before the vaccine became available in the 1990s.
