Iraqi Electricity Minister Ziad Ali Fadel is holding talks in Ashgabat with the management of the state-owned Turkmengaz company, according to local industry website Nebitgas.
"The purpose of the meeting was to discuss mutually beneficial co-operation in the gas sector."
Iraq has faced disruptions in Iranian gas supplies (which accounted for about 40% of imports) this summer, and the government has instructed it to find alternatives.
Experts told Daryo that Iraq plans to sign a five-year contract to buy up to 9bn cubic metres of Turkmen gas per year. The deliveries are expected to be made on a reimbursable basis through Iran.
This practice has been applied since 2022 in the process of gas supplies from Turkmenistan to Azerbaijan. Under the indefinite contract, Iran can receive up to 3.0-4.0bn cubic metres of gas per year from Serakhs, Turkmenistan to supply its equivalent to Astara, Azerbaijan.
These swap operations help provide natural gas to Iranian provinces such as Rezavi, North and South Khorasan, Golestan and Semnan, which are remote from national gas resources.
