During a briefing organized by the Chinese embassy in Uzbekistan, Ambassador Yui Jun discussed the Uzbek-Kyrgyz-Chinese railway project.
Ambassador Yui Jun emphasized that the concerted efforts, as agreed upon by the leaders, will undoubtedly lead to a successful completion.
"China takes this project very seriously. Ongoing and swift negotiations are currently in progress regarding the next steps. We are talking about a railway spanning over 500 kilometers and involving a significant investment. We will not relent because this project serves the interests of China, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan," stated the ambassador.
The Uzbek-Kyrgyz-Chinese railway project has faced delays over the years. In 2018, it was announced that the construction of the railway line linking Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and China was being jointly prepared.
In January of this year, the leaders of Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan agreed to intensify their efforts in the construction of the railway.
For reference, Ambassador Yui Jun assumed the position of China's Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Uzbekistan in July.
Earlier, Daryo reported that the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan (CKU) railway project, which aims to connect China to Uzbekistan via Kyrgyzstan, faces delays, raising doubts about its viability and impact on regional trade routes. While Kazakhstan is concerned about losing cargo traffic, Uzbekistan sees it as a shorter route for shipments from China to Europe.
The project has been postponed due to financing challenges and investor search. It involves a 454-kilometer railway with significant portions in Kyrgyzstan, requiring bridges and tunnels, estimated to cost around $4.7bn. Disagreements among participating countries on financing are the main reason for the delays.
