Concerns over the postponement of the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway construction project have been dispelled by Bakit Toroboyev, Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan. The Silk Road briefing initially reported the postponement, but official statements have clarified the situation.
Toroboyev emphatically denied the rumors surrounding the project's delay and reaffirmed the commitment to its timely implementation. He provided insight into recent negotiations held during his practical visit to China, where the project's progress was discussed with relevant stakeholders.
"The news that the construction of the railway has been postponed is not true,"
stated Toroboyev. He emphasized that the technical and economic groundwork (TES) for the project has been completed, marking a significant milestone in its development.
Toroboyev shed light on the ongoing discussions regarding the financing model for the railway, a crucial aspect of the project. Negotiations are underway to determine the most suitable financing approach. A joint office involving the three countries involved in the project has been established in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, to facilitate the railway's construction.
The China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway project was originally agreed upon during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit held in Samarkand in September 2022. Subsequent progress has been made, with the technical and economic basis finalized by April 29, 2023, and a tripartite document signifying the commitment to the project's construction signed on May 19.
Toroboyev underscored the significance of the project for Kyrgyzstan's future and urged against the spread of false information that could discredit the ongoing efforts, cautioning against relying on unverified sources.
