Turkmenistan and China have signed an intergovernmental agreement on technical and economic cooperation, Turkmenistan's state agency reports. This was the result of negotiations between Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow, Chairman of the Turkmenistan People's Assembly, and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing.
The information said that the customs services of the two countries signed a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in capacity building of the Authorised Economic Operators Programme.
"The parties discussed the key vectors of Turkmen-Chinese interaction, which demonstrates progressive dynamics and is built with a view to a long-term perspective."
Turkmenistan is the only one of the five Central Asian states with a positive trade balance with China.
According to China's General Administration of Customs, in the first half of 2023, total trade between the two countries grew by 12.3% to $5.55bn.
Exports to Turkmenistan totalled $476mn, while imports reached $5.076bn, of which natural gas supplies (via Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan) accounted for $5.058bn.
