Dual EU goals in Central Asia: connectivity and influence

Dual EU goals in Central Asia: connectivity and influence

The European Union's engagement with Central Asia is marked by a dual purpose: enhancing connectivity and bolstering European influence in the region. These objectives involve logistical improvements, exploration of alternative trade routes, and tapping into Central Asian resources.

However, as cooperation deepens, political considerations similar to those in EU's relations with Turkey, Azerbaijan, and the Organization of Turkic States (OTS) may come to the forefront. Addressing these concerns is crucial for the success of EU-Central Asia interconnectivity, International Studies Specialist, Eldaniz Gusseinov reports.

The primary goal is to enhance connectivity in Central Asia, focusing on logistical advancements and shaping the EU's perception. This strategy aims to foster economic cooperation through improved transportation and infrastructure.

    Alternative Trade Routes

Key to this strategy is the synergy between the EU and Central Asia, intricately linked to Azerbaijan and Turkey. While Azerbaijan plays a central role in trade routes, Turkey offers an alternative route from Central Asia through Georgia to the Black Sea and further into Europe. However, questions regarding the security of these routes, particularly across the Black Sea, persist.

    Challenges and Opportunities

    1. Turkey's Role: Turkey's significance lies in its strategic location and growing trade flow between Central Asia and Europe. Challenges may arise in Turkey's relations with the EU and how it aligns with its foreign policy objectives.

    2. Azerbaijan's Importance: Azerbaijan is pivotal in providing alternative trade routes, especially in bypassing Russia. Challenges here could come in the form of EU sanctions and efforts to reduce dependence on Azerbaijani routes.

    3. EU-OTS Relations: The most intriguing dynamics are expected in the relationship between the EU and the Organization of Turkic States. Collaborative possibilities include addressing infrastructure challenges, reducing tariff restrictions, and extending the scope of customs unions. However, potential challenges include stability concerns and conflicts over Northern Cyprus within the OTS, requiring clarification.

The evolving EU-Central Asia relations present both challenges and opportunities. Successful cooperation and conflict resolution mechanisms are essential for realizing the EU's objectives in Central Asia.
