Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov has invited CIS countries to the first meeting of the Central Asia Security Meeting to be held in Ashgabat next year, Turkmen Habarlary agency reports.
"Relevant to the format of cooperation within the Commonwealth are Turkmenistan's proposals to establish the Central Asia Security Meeting under the auspices of the UN," Berdimuhamedov said at the CIS Heads of State Summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.
According to him, the purpose of the meeting is to develop approaches and solutions aimed at bringing together and synchronising the efforts of Central Asian countries and other interested states, international organisations, financial and economic institutions to ensure the sustainable and conflict-free development of the region.
"The Turkmen side invites the Commonwealth states to take part in the work of the first session of the Meeting in Ashgabat next year."
The UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia opened in Ashgabat in 2007. Turkmenistan has maintained a positive neutrality status since 1995.
Central Asia comprises the territory of five countries: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. The region borders Afghanistan and Iran to the south, China to the east and Russia to the west and north.
